Kenz كنز in Arabic means treasure, and Masjid Al Kenz was very much its namesake- a gem in the heart of the neighbourhood Rimal, in Gaza City. Tawfiq Murtaja, whose story is about this mosque, will tell you more:
‘I vividly remember the first time I ever set foot in Al Kenz Mosque as if it were yesterday. I was 10 years old, and I had just moved with my family to Gaza after living in Doha. It was a Friday, and my father had taken me to the mosque to perform Dhuhr prayer. Wearing my white dishdasha and slippers, I eagerly made my way to the mosque looking forward to meeting our neighbors for the first time, hand in hand with my father. The mosque stood just across the street from our home.
As the prayer concluded, people exchanged greetings, their faces lit up with joy at my father’s return from his stay in Qatar. I remember feeling bashful as my father introduced me to the neighbors, each of them either shaking my hand or patting my head, leaving a core memory with me. I remember meeting Khalid, who later became one of my best friends.
I have many memories in that mosque, one remaining etched in my memory - Eid celebrations. The whole neighborhood would be filled with the resounding echos of Takbiratul Eid, with neighbourhood children, including my little relatives, eagerly gathering around the mosque’s microphone to recite the Takbirat for the whole neighborhood to hear. Following Salatul Eid, the elderly would bring a large bag filled with treats for the children. I still remember the smiles on their faces as they opened the bags and start distributing, so joyous and excited.’
During the ongoing Palestinian genocide, Israel has destroyed over 1000 mosques including Al Kenz. In these nights of power, may Allah continue to give power and strength to the people of Palestine as they pray amongst the rubble of their destroyed mosques. May we see these structures rise again in glory- in the same way the Palestinians have continued to rise up despite the horrors they endure, and may we all have the chance to visit them and pray together in a free Palestine.
